Formulas

SectionArea ASecond moment of area I (strong axis)
Rectangle b × hb·hb·h³ / 12
Round bar, diameter dπ·d² / 4π·d⁴ / 64
Round tube D × tπ·(D² − d²) / 4π·(D⁴ − d⁴) / 64, with d = D − 2t
Rectangular tube B × H × tB·H − (B−2t)·(H−2t)[B·H³ − (B−2t)·(H−2t)³] / 12
I-beam h × b, web tw, flange tf2·b·tf + (h−2tf)·tw[b·h³ − (b−tw)·(h−2tf)³] / 12

The elastic section modulus is W = I / zmax (the distance from the centre to the outer fibre), and the radius of gyration is i = √(I / A). The bending stress is then σ = M / W.

Real profiles differ by a few percent because of rounded corners and fillets. Rolled I-beams have fillets between web and flange, so the table values are higher: for an IPE 300 (h = 300, b = 150, tw = 7.1, tf = 10.7 mm) this tool gives about 8000 cm⁴, the steel table 8356 cm⁴. Hollow sections have rounded corners, so the table values are lower. Use the manufacturer's tables for real profiles.
